E2 Dipolar quantum gases of strongly magnetic atoms

E2: Dipolar quantum gases of strongly magnetic atoms

Summary

Exceptional advances in the field of ultracold quantum gases have opened new frontiers in the understanding of modern quantum physics. The proposed project targets to use of a highly magnetic atomic species, erbium (Er), to study strongly dipolar effects in few- and many-body physics. The choice of erbium has the advantage of combining the richness of the dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) together with the huge knowhow available with atomic systems, harnessing moreover the particular strengths of the lanthanide (Ln) species for dipolar and quantum physics.
